in oakland after an eight hour police stand off. the s.w.a.t. team surrounded the home on 26th avenue near international boulevard early this morning. in search of the gunman who they say opened fire a few blocks away. six people came out of the house during the stand off by 8:00 this morning the shooting suspect had surrendered. police were alerted to the system after the shooting victims were driven to the hospital. >>> seven men from sacramento county are recooperating tonight. police say the victims were shot as they were leaving a family gathering in the city of galt at around 10:30. witnesses on the scene tell investigators say saw somebody open fire from a passing car. a neighbor says this is not the first time violence has erupted in his neighborhood. >> crazy. we had some incident about five years ago when they had a shooting in the other corner. >> officials say the shooting may have been gang related. all of the victims are expected to survive. >> investigators are looking into whether reckless driving led to a fiery and fatal crash tonight between a motorcyclist and several car

in europe, and oakland is one of those cities, but i, of course, wearing my regional hat, have looked to expand what i have been learning through the network and the opportunities that present themselves to the network and to expand that. and where better to bring a cycling delegation than to the city of san francisco, a city very much on the verge of, i think, turning the tide in favor of cycling where there are 40-some-odd, 43-plus projects waiting in the wings for the environmental lawsuits to come to a close. so it is very exciting to have the opportunity for the delegation to come here, and i think the timely honkly, could not be -- honestly, could not be better. they have spent just over a day in the city of oakland doing a bit of a bike tour, meeting with elected officials there and a community open house last night where we had 80 folks turn out to listen to their talk. the other thing, obviously the public support and the public interest in this issue is alive and well and i think it's wonderful to see. i will also say that none of these events will be possible without some o

commute hours. our news reporter is live at the bart station in oakland. how is it going so far, amy? >> kristen, we have not seen major problems but the debate is raging on. bart is trying to make it more comfortable for everyone, trying to make this work. but bicycle riders say they realize it is crowd asked they worried about tonight saying the evening commute is when it really is jammed up in there. >> bicycles are allowed on bart trains at any hour this week but that does not necessarily mean they welcome. >> they are constantly in the way and they take up two or three chairs. you commute around 5:00, it is not a good idea to have them. it is really crowded. >> officials say they have reconfigured the trains to try and create more space for bicycle riders and will try out the new space this week during a test run. even during the busy commute bicycles are allowed on board this week. >> some we removed, we also took out the windshields in many of our cars so you can see when you ride a bart train that the areas near the car doors are much more filled with room. >> bicycle riders

be seen hanging over antioch brentwood in oakland today due to a grass fire on sherman island. this is a startling sight to people and according to fire officials the blazes started around 3:30 p.m. this afternoon on the island located with the san joaquin sacramento rivers meet and also viewers sent in these photos of ash testing homes firefighters decided to let the fire burn itself out since no structures are threatened. tonight an investigation continues after a deadly shooting and a 10 hour standoff in oakland. the standoff started just after 1:00 o'clock this morning when police went to inspect the residents after two gunshot victims where hospitalized police traced a potential suspect to a home on 25th avenue the scene was cleared of 11:30 a.m. and according to police they detained several people for questioning but at this time it is not clear the shooting suspect is in custody. one of the victims has died and the other victim is in serious condition tonight. >>> the dome of city hall san francisco bay is ingrained for tonight. obviously because of st. patrick's day. t

right, now check this out. they released a time lapse video of the work being done here on the oakland airport connector. bart transit officials closed all the lanes of northbound interstate 880 between 1:00 to 6:00 a.m. this morning as it is a part of thbig construction project that will connect them to oakland international airport. and they will close it at one more time next sunday. >>> well, free parking near the at&t park is nothing, but a memory now. for months the municipal transportation agency has been putting in parking meters at the bay area between bryant and king on 5th and 2nd street. kpix 5 is on third street where parking costs a lot more on game days. sue? >> reporter: oh yes. now at the moment, this is after 10:00 where they say free parking. but that was not the case earlier today. now the game is over and people are walking back to their cars where some of them are finding an expensive surprise on their windshield. he is feeling pretty lucky to have found a parking lot near the ballpark just in time for the world baseball classics. >> we went around a couple of tim

oakland and south san francisco has not been living up to expectations. the 42-million dollar service was launched nine months ago and operates seven trips each weekday. however, officials say ridership is less than a third of what they were hoping for during the ferries' first year on the bay. now, in an effort to boost ridership, the ferry operator wants to spend another 230-thousand dollars to add more trips. it would include a third afternoon trip to the east bay and two midday trips a week between south san francisco and pier 41. a beautiful view from the south bay the tail lights are northbound, so far, so good. your commute into your weather coming up. for cyclists as well as in oakland as in portland as in san francisco -- excuse me, i think, yes, important to be again the whole different thing. but as i understand most probably brussels is somewhere in-between. in the last few years, we managed to raise the amount of cyclists let's say from 1% in 2000 to what today is estimated but how did the countings go, but it's estimated as being 3 1/2%. i have made it as one of my priorities to put the discussion on what we call soft mobility for pedestrians and cyclists to put it on the political agenda and being a deputy for the green party in an assembly of 89 deputies, it has been possible to find an alliance in every political party whether it's the liberal, the socialists, the christian democrats, or the green. so we have been taking initiatives together asking hearings in the parliament and so on. i think it's very important that grassroots organization kansas do their work. i'm still participating in actions when we are doing that in brussels. but you need that. you need an efficient administration but you also need that political support.
